(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Around the 45 mark of the new A-Team movie, there is a scene with a pretty funny Star Trek reference. The A-Team are about to break out their buddy Howlin' Mad Murdock from a psychiatric prison (this also happened in the pilot to the original show, btw). Murdock receives a mysterious package which contains a DVD movie called "The Greater Escape." The opening credits for this movie lists an actor named Reginald Barclay. Children of the 80's will understand the connection, as Dwight Schultz played the original Murdock character and also Reginald Barclay on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)For most folks, the name Elliot Ness is synonymous with hard nose, balls-of-steel police work. The mere mention of the iconic crimefighter immediately conjures up images of the downfall of Al Capone – including perhaps images from the mostly inaccurate but entertaining 1987 movie "The Untouchables." Indeed, after the 1931 conviction of Capone, Elliot Ness had risen to the level of larger-than-life hero. Little did he know, however, that he would soon face a nemesis which would prove far more formidable than the gangsters of Chicago.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Karl Tanzler was never one to let reality get in the way of his warped view of the world. At fifty years old he was described as “an imaginative, impractical inventor, scientist, electrical wizard and sometimes ingenious liar' who had 'already begun to mix fact and fantasy.' Even his name seemed to change along with his view of the world. He was listed as Georg Karl Tänzler on his German marriage certificate, as Carl Tanzler von Cosel on his United States citizenship papers, and he was listed as Carl Tanzler on his Florida death certificate. Some of his hospital records were signed Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel. Not much is really known about the realities of Tanzler’s early life, but his later years would become legendary.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Every time a new trailer for Star Trek comes out, I lose more and more faith and interest in the project. The first trailer of any substance showed us a beautiful mint-condition 1960's Corvette being driven over the side of a cliff. Appropriate symbolism, I think.

(Current rating 5 based on 1 votes)It was just another normal night for twenty-one-year-old coastguardsman John Cullen. At midnight, he began his foot patrol along the coast of Long Island, New York. It was June 13, 1942 and America was ensnared in the turmoil of Wold War II. Cullen's stretch of beach was considered a prime target for enemy landing parties. It was one of the easternmost positions in the United States and an access point to New York City. Despite this fact, Cullen was the only defense the United States had on that beach during that night, armed only with a flashlight - which was proving quite useless against the dense fog.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Sometimes -and by sometimes I mean bi-daily- I will burst into a bar, down a gallon of Vodka, and proceed to pound my fist upon the unforgiving mahogany bartop while screaming "WHY HAVEN'T THEY LANDED ON THE MOON IN MY LIFETIME?? WHAT KIND OF SPACE PROGRAM IS NASA RUNNING THESE DAYS!?? WHY ISN'T THERE A BASE UP THERE?? THANKS A LOT STUPID SHUTTLE PROGRAM!!! JEEEEEEEEZUS!!!!" then I'll throw a bottle against a wall and the police arrive. Ok, that's exaggerated. I don't actually drink. I do however scream about there being no moon landing for me to stare slack jawed at, as my father got to do in his youth. As such, I've just had to gawk and drool at Apollo 11 for all of my life. And as such, I present:
STUFF you probably didn't know about the first moon landing.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)On this very day in 1958, Strategic Air Command's B-47 No. 876 hurtled into the air from the runway at Hunter Air Force Base at Savannah around 4:34 p.m and was headed off on a highly classified flight—Operation Snow Flurry—to one of the four SAC fields in North Africa. The plane was required to carry real nuclear bombs overseas for readiness in the event of war breaking out with the Soviet Union.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Over the last 100 years society has seen what I have no doubt will be remembered as a renaissance period. The 20th century came in with people riding on horseback and lighting their houses with candles and left with rockets flying around and the internet conquering mankind. The effect on technology is very evident on society, but its even more evident in the military. For the first time, we gained weaponry that could exterminate all life on Earth. We also gained many other hi-tech gadgetry for pinpointing and tracking enemies. With new technology comes new battle doctrines on how to best employ them. Most military leaders welcome this as its a good chance to advance their careers. Some, however, do not.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Any child of the 80's will remember the amusing little game show titled Press Your Luck, which was distinguished by its big flashing board to the left and contestants mindlessly rambling "COME ON BIG MONEY! BIG MONEY! STOP!" at which point they would slam a button, the board stopped flashing and they either won money and prizes or were completely bankrupted by the dreaded WHAMMY, which would then dance around on the screen and taunt said contestant.
Truly, they were Gods who conceived this game, but even Gods can be conned as it turned out.

Somehow I let last week pass without recognizing the anniversary of the death of Joshua Norton, the first and only Emperor of the United States! As punishment I will taser myself until a nice foamy froth erupts from my mouth!
But before I convulse upon the floor, let's move along to
REMEMBERING EMPEROR NORTON I, EMPEROR OF THE UNITED STATES AND PROTECTOR OF MEXICO

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)40 Years of Star Trek
Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future sprang to life on the small screen on September 8, 1966. From the first moments of the opening sequence and the now immortalized words "Space, the final frontier," the world began to change. Roddenberry not only presented us with a vision of the future beyond this planet, he gave us hope that humanity could and would rise above our differences to achieve enlightenment, unity, and peace. Forty years later, these ideals are imbedded in the worldwide mythos known as Star Trek, which is the most influential television show of all time.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Tonight I had a pleasurable (although somewhat akward) experience of watching Comedy Central's Roast of William Shatner. Now, under normal circumstances this would have been entirely pleasurable and not a bit akward except, for reasons previously discussed, I'm a fucking pauper who is totally destitute and as such I don't have cable TV. Thus I went to my mother's house who insisted she watch it with me.

(Current rating 0 based on 0 votes)Well somehow the Wall Street Journal decided that my SHATNER IS KIRK creation qualifies me as an expert on Star Trek and I was interviewed about the proposed upcoming film. Although I responded with paragraph upon paragraph of useful Trek info, I guess I didn't really say anything that everyone else wasn't saying.

One of my latest ytmnd creations, SHATNER IS KIRK, was mentioned in this Washington Post Article.
