It's really no secret that I love the 1960's show Jonny Quest. This is a cartoon that ran for only one season but continues to have strong influence even today (as fans of The Venture Brothers are aware). That's because Jonny Quest is quite possibly the coolest god damned cartoon ever made.
Yet despite this obvious greatness, there is a stunning lack of Jonny Quest merchandise. Specifically, action figures. I can't stand it. It gnaws at my very being that Hanna Barbera made fucking Deputy Dog figures but skimped out on Jonny Quest. So I guess it's high time I do something about it...
I'm setting out to make the Jonny Quest characters one by one.
First up, revered government super-scientist Dr. Benton Quest! Here are some more pics of the good doctor:
All right, there's what we're after. Now to decide on a scale. I must say I was very captivated by pictures of a canceled series of JQ figures from Playing Mantis. They were perfect. Really spot-on. I want them. So I'll try to create them!
The figures appear to be 1:6 scale (or the scale of old GI Joes and Barbie figures). Fortunately, there are a TON of 1:6 items available. Heads, bodies, clothes, accessories - you name it. So after digging around and looking at over 200 heads (not an exaggeration) I finally found what I was looking for:
This definitely needs modification, but I can really see Benton hiding in there just dying to get out.
First step: Get rid of that hair. This head is made of a hard rubber, so I took an exacto-knife to it and whittled away the hair on top as much as I could. See that black spot there? That's where I actually cut into the cavity inside of the head. No matter though since soon it will be covered with apoxie-sculpt.
Apoxie-Sculpt applied! I absolutely love this stuff. You mix it from two parts into a putty which, in a few hours time, will harden into a plastic-like substance. A more talented person could probably make an entire head out of this stuff, but that person is certainly not me.
Now to shape the hair, and add Benton's trademark stache...
And then the pointy beard.
He's looking a bit like Sean Connery, so I guess some orange paint is in order...
I'm happy with that! Up next body & clothes...
Update: I did get two bodies in the mail today (the other meant to eventually be Race) but I am not sure how happy I am with them. The skin color is noticeably different from the head. It's possible this won't really be an issue when the figure is clothed (still waiting on those) but we will see. I guess I could try painting it but eehhhh....
